Kathak with us

Origins and History

Kathak derives its name from the Sanskrit word "Katha," which means story. It originally developed as a narrative art form performed in temples and royal courts, where dancers used mime and gestures to depict mythological stories and epics.

Over time, Kathak absorbed influences from Persian and Central Asian dance traditions, particularly during the Mughal era (16th to 19th centuries). This period saw the refinement of Kathak into a sophisticated form that incorporated rhythmic footwork (tatkar), pirouettes (chakkars), and intricate hand gestures (mudras).
